Too bad there isn’t a prize involved. Like when we all could have won a free taco when MIR re-entered.

Laughs, thinking he’s at 44 degrees north, goes to Google Maps and realizes he’s at 42 degrees north.

O shit

You should reply with ‘when I’m good and ready’

The top picture irritates me. Its not a real photo. I don’t think there is any way that stars would be visible while looking at the sun from orbit.

Are you accusing it of being Fake News?

HDR photo? There is a difference between “real” and “matches what can be seen by the human eye”... but I tend to agree with you here

I’m well above 42.8N, so nothing for me to worry about.

My guess is that is is a mashup of different photo’s, It could be a camera but I’m pretty sure there is to much light pollution on the day side to be able to do that.

Looking at an Exposure Value chart deep space/nebulas are at -7 and full sun is 16, which makes it a 24 stop difference. The highest rated sensor I could find referenced in some quick googling was a Sony video sensor that had a 21 stop dynamic range. Close, but no cigar. Most nice digital cameras seem to have 12-15 stops.

So yeah, it’s probably a combination of images as you said. In another couple years we’ll probably have a camera that could take that picture in one shot, but even then it would never look “natural” to the human eye.

“Between the 43º North and 43º South latitudes” so everything between Patagonia and the Great Lakes, aka most of the world

Everywhere that could be under its orbit.
